Shrine of the Fossor
1417 11th Street W
Bradenton, Florida 34205
This is a shrine to the fossor, Latin for gravedigger. Usually shunned by society for his close proximity to death, there are exceptions:
Tom Petty composed the song, Mary Jane's Last Dance, after working as a gravedigger. This shrine is dedicated to him.
In Hamlet, the gravediggers use "the literal graveness of the situation (the funeral) subsides to the humor. This makes it possible for the characters to look at the subject of death objectively, giving rise to such speeches as Hamlet's musings over the skull of Yorick."
